The appropriate solution depends on how much information is available about the existing equipment.

Standard Replacement Mechanical Seal

A standard replacement is usually the best option when the existing pump and seal can be clearly identified.

Typical situations include:

  • the pump manufacturer and model are known;
  • the OEM mechanical seal reference is available;
  • the existing seal has standard dimensions;
  • the required material combination is known;
  • a direct compatible equivalent can be identified.

In these cases, a replacement mechanical seal can usually be selected without the need for a completely custom design.

Custom-Made Mechanical Seal

A custom-made mechanical seal may be required when identification is not possible or when the existing equipment uses non-standard dimensions or operating conditions.

Typical situations include:

  • the pump or seal identification is unavailable;
  • the OEM part number is unknown;
  • installation dimensions are non-standard;
  • special materials are required;
  • the seal must be manufactured according to a drawing;
  • the seal must be reproduced from dimensions or an existing sample.

When a standard equivalent cannot be identified, the mechanical seal can be evaluated based on its design, dimensions and operating parameters.

What Information Is Required to Manufacture a Mechanical Seal?

Accurate technical information is essential when manufacturing a custom mechanical seal.

The most important parameters are described below.

1. Shaft Diameter

The shaft diameter is one of the primary dimensions used to identify and manufacture a mechanical seal.

This measurement needs to be accurate because the rotating seal components must fit correctly onto the pump shaft or shaft sleeve.

For an unknown mechanical seal, the shaft diameter is normally one of the first dimensions that should be provided.

2. Installation Dimensions

Shaft diameter alone is not sufficient.

Depending on the seal design, additional dimensions may include:

  • total working length;
  • rotating unit length;
  • stationary seat outside diameter;
  • stationary seat thickness;
  • spring length;
  • seal chamber dimensions;
  • shaft sleeve dimensions;
  • location of shoulders or retaining components.

A technical drawing with clearly marked dimensions is the preferred solution whenever available.

If a drawing does not exist, measurements and detailed photographs of the existing seal can often provide the information required for identification.

3. Stationary Seat Design

Mechanical seals can use different stationary seat configurations.

The seat should therefore be identified by:

  • outside diameter;
  • inside diameter;
  • thickness;
  • mounting design;
  • O-ring or rubber cup configuration;
  • anti-rotation arrangement, where applicable.

Providing photographs of both the rotating and stationary parts can significantly simplify the identification process.

4. Process Medium

The liquid or process medium being sealed directly affects material selection.

Examples include:

  • clean water;
  • wastewater;
  • seawater;
  • brine;
  • oils;
  • fuels;
  • chemicals;
  • solvents;
  • food products;
  • thermal fluids.

A seal designed for clean water may not be suitable for a chemically aggressive liquid, abrasive wastewater or high-salinity application.

For this reason, the process medium should always be specified when requesting a custom mechanical seal.

5. Operating Temperature

Temperature affects both the seal faces and the elastomer components.

Applications operating at elevated temperatures may require different face materials, elastomers or even a different mechanical seal design.

The normal operating temperature and maximum expected temperature should therefore be provided whenever possible.

6. Operating Pressure

Seal chamber pressure is another important parameter.

Higher pressure can change the required seal design and determine whether a standard component seal, balanced seal or cartridge solution is appropriate.

When available, provide:

  • normal operating pressure;
  • maximum pressure;
  • suction or discharge conditions relevant to the seal chamber.

7. Rotation Speed

Shaft speed affects heat generation and the operating conditions at the seal faces.

For pumps, the speed is normally expressed in RPM — revolutions per minute.

Providing the motor speed or pump data plate can therefore help during mechanical seal selection.

Mechanical Seal Face Materials

The two seal faces are among the most important working components of a mechanical seal.

The correct material combination depends on the operating conditions and process medium.

Carbon / Ceramic

  • Carbon / Ceramic is widely used for clean water and general-purpose applications.
  • It is a common and economical combination for applications without highly abrasive or chemically aggressive media.

Carbon / Silicon Carbide — SiC

  • Carbon / Silicon Carbide is commonly used where improved wear resistance and chemical resistance are required.
  • This combination can be suitable for many industrial pump applications.

Silicon Carbide / Silicon Carbide — SiC / SiC

  • Silicon Carbide / Silicon Carbide is suitable for many demanding applications involving abrasive media, seawater and industrial fluids, subject to the complete operating conditions.

Tungsten Carbide Combinations

  • Tungsten Carbide combinations can be used for applications where high mechanical strength and wear resistance are important.
  • There is no single material combination that is suitable for every application.
  • The correct selection should be based on the medium, temperature, pressure, shaft speed and equipment design.

Choosing the Correct Elastomer

Elastomers provide secondary sealing inside the mechanical seal.

The material must be compatible with the process medium and operating temperature.

NBR — Nitrile

  • NBR is frequently used for water, oils and general industrial applications within its operating limits.

EPDM

  • EPDM is commonly selected for water, hot water and various chemical applications.

FKM / Viton

  • FKM / Viton is often used for oils, fuels, higher temperatures and many chemical applications.
  • Other elastomer materials may be selected for more demanding operating conditions.
  • Compatibility with the process fluid should always be checked before the final material configuration is selected.

Can a Mechanical Seal Be Manufactured from an Existing Sample?

In many cases, yes.

An existing mechanical seal can provide valuable information even when the manufacturer and part number are unknown.

For identification, we recommend providing photographs showing:

  • complete mechanical seal;
  • rotating part;
  • stationary seat;
  • front and side views;
  • shaft diameter;
  • major dimensions measured with a caliper;
  • pump nameplate, if available.

A physical sample or detailed technical drawing can provide additional information when the geometry cannot be determined reliably from photographs alone.

However, copying dimensions is only part of the process.

The actual operating conditions should also be confirmed so that the selected face and elastomer materials are appropriate for the application.
